tom

Thomas Okamas Kitsunious, commonly known as Tom, is a prominent character in the ASSC Studios universe. Created by Shadow, Tom has served various roles across several decades of storytelling, evolving from a political caricature into a battle-hardened veteran and core member of the 64 core characters.

Character Identification

  • Full Name: Thomas Okamas Kitsunious
  • Alias/Nickname: Tom
  • Pronouns: He/him
  • Creator: Shadow

Creation and Development

Tom was created between Late 2001 to January 2002. His first appearance was a short comic where he saves George W. Bush from a choking incident involving a pretzel. He was originally conceived to represent George W. Bush supporters (and later non-MAGA Republicans). Visually, he was inspired by Miles “Tails” Prower and later Amadeus Prower. Initially the “brains” and sidekick to the Republican party leadership. After a period of inactivity, he transitioned into a recurring background character. In the modern era, he is one of the 64 core characters, often cast as an unwilling assistant or sidekick to villains and anti-heroes.

Development History

The “real-world” evolution of Tom is divided into several distinct eras of ASSC history:

  • Before Time: While Tom did not exist yet, the dynamic between Duckman and George W. Bush served as a conceptual prototype for Tom’s future relationship with the President.
  • Distant Past: Two versions co-existed. A younger version starred in Bushed, while a “future” version in the defunct ASSC II timeline appeared as a grizzled general with an eyepatch.
  • Past: These two versions occasionally interacted for holiday specials or Character Battles.
  • Recent Past: The “eyepatch militia” design gained significant popularity through character battles. The original younger design made a final major appearance in UNSINKABLE: Retold.
  • Post Genesis: His characterization and design began to reflect more authoritarian or “fascist” visual themes.
  • Post Snap: While retaining his “fascist” aesthetic, his personality shifted toward internal conflict, as he began questioning the motivations of his political leaders.

Visual Design

Tom’s physical appearance is that of a two-tailed anthropomorphic kitsune with green and orange fur and red eyes. He has two known transformations. Tom’s Pseudo Transformation turns his fur from green to a magenta color scheme. His Biomerge Form is a draconic form featuring orange flames and White Gold Paladin Armor equipped with an arm blaster.

The Younger Tom wore a blue hat with a “T” logo, white shirt, brown pants, and blue gloves. Older Tom is notable for a black eyepatch, black or white jackets, and occasionally camo or gray footwear.

Initially a green and white palette was used for Tom. His power-up form was redesigned from a red/white palette to a “Hyper” style flashing effect to avoid visual confusion with Kiwi.

Personality and Character Traits

Originally defined by his unwavering loyalty as a “right-hand man,” his modern incarnation is defined by the physical and emotional scars of his history (represented by his missing eye) and his placement in malevolent circles despite his own internal doubts. This journey from a brainy, impulsive youth to a cynical, grizzled veteran has left modern versions of this character in denial.

Based on Tom’s history of serving political structures, his loyalty to leaders (even when unwilling or questioning them), and his “grizzled veteran” status, he is considered to be Lawful Neutral.

Tom is fundamentally a creature of structure. Whether he is a sidekick to a President or an assistant to a villain, he operates within a hierarchy. His “Denial” trait and his tendency to stay within these systems even while questioning them makes him a character who prioritizes the “order” of his current situation or his duty over a personal moral crusade of good or evil. He follows the role he is cast in, even if he isn't always happy about it.

Reception and Legacy

The younger version of Tom won the very first Character Battle. However, subsequent polls showed that the “Older Tom” (eyepatch variant) eventually became the more popular version among the audience.

His character development paved the way for other government-affiliated characters and influenced the creation of Ugla and Kiwi.
